In 2022, Sebastian Herkner teamed up again with Ligne Roset to create the Janus cabinet for which he entirely chose the finishes. The originality of this piece of furniture lies in the fact that its doors are openable/closed. The word ''January'' comes from Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings. He was the god of transition – endings, beginnings, gates, passages.

Material

‍The unit’s central niche is equipped with a shelf in bronze-tinted toughened glass which may be fixed at 3 possible levels. The pivoting doors are equipped with aluminum handles coloured to match the pivot uprights. The central niche is backlit by means of two inset LED strips. The base and back panel of the central niche are clad in thick bronze-tinted mirrored glass with safety film on the back.

About the designer

Sebastian Herkner

Sebastian Herkner (born 1981) studied Product Design at HfG Offenbach University of Art and Design. In the year 2006 Sebastian Herkner founded his own studio. Since that time, he has designed furniture, lamps and smaller items for manufacturers such as Ames, and Tradition, Cappellini, ClassiCon, Dedon, Ligne Roset, Linteloo, Moroso, Pulpo, Rosenthal, Thonet, Wittmann and Zanotta. His works have won numerous accolades. In 2019, Maison & Objet elected him “Designer of the Year”. In the process he creates not just chairs, sofas, lamps, tables, vases and carpets, but an entire cosmos that shines a new light on how objects can appeal to the senses, and where beauty is cultivated from within the process itself and from his empathy towards people.
